The app

Earshot records nothing, uploads nothing, and has no account to sign in to. Speech recognition and synthesis both run on your Mac against models kept in your own home directory. Your audio and your transcripts never reach us, because there is no path by which they could.

The app makes three kinds of network request on its own. It downloads those models the first time you need them, it asks whether a newer version has been released, and, once you have paid, it claims a seat for the Mac you are sitting at.

That last one is how we count seats against what somebody bought. It sends the licence key, a hash of the machine’s hardware id, and the name you have given the computer, once when you paste the key and once a month after that to renew it. The name is so that a seat list reads as “the old MacBook” rather than a row of hashes, and if yours has your name in it then that is what we hold. None of the three requests carries a word you said.

This website

These pages use PostHog to count visits and clicks, hosted in the EU. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your machine: a visit is counted while you are reading and forgotten when you close the tab, so we can see which pages and buttons people use without keeping anything that points back at you. That is also why there is no consent banner in front of this page, rather than one asking permission to follow you around a site about owning your own voice.

None of it is in the app, and none of it ever will be. An app that promises to record nothing has no business telling us what somebody clicked.

If you buy a licence we keep your email address, which plan you bought, and the key we issued, so it can be sent to you again. Payment is handled by Stripe and card details never reach us. Email is sent through Resend. Ask us to delete your record and we will; the key itself keeps working, because it verifies offline and nothing here is consulted while you work. What it eventually needs is a seat renewed, and that takes about a month to come round.
